Palms and mangroves are painted in detail as they grow out of the foliage along the waterway. This hammock, with abundant wildlife and strong reflections, is typical of the marshy hammocks along the low coastal areas of Florida. A cool palette of blues and greens make a calming scene. It started out more technical and ended up with loose brushstrokes as the little palm took on its own personality. A tropical breeze and a colorful sky captures fun memories at the beach. This painting is filled with color! It glows with a soft orange light and is softened by blue shadows. I decided to paint a palm tree on the beach which would seem radiant with warm light as the sun started to set. The sand reflects color as well as the waves.

South of New Smyrna Beach and near Canaveral Seashore is Mosquito Lagoon. It's a boating and fishing paradise, dotted with
islands and home to wildlife. On a perfect boating day, the breezes blow and the sun shines while the waves lap at the shoreline. Flat boats are everywhere with fishermen waiting patiently. The painting colors here are on the cool side while still reflecting light.
The many layers of oil built up the texture of the brushstrokes. Light layers show the shallow water at the edge of the shore.

Coastal Escape, a Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

This is a scene along the Florida Intracoastal Waterway which flows along the coastline next to the Atlantic Ocean. The barrier islands make up the true beaches of Florida, and the waterway is on the other side. Captured in oil, the Florida sky adds so much dimension and movement to the overall landscape. The palms, palmettos and mangroves show the land in its natural form. And the water is like the anchoring factor which brings it together. Many layers of oil went into the depth of the painting. This painting was chosen to be in the "Simply the Best" book by Timothy's Gallery and Art-Exchange.com. It is an 18 x 22 original oil on masonite.
