Enlightened, A Florida Coastal Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

I passed by this same location several weeks ago, and the boat was still pulled up onto the shoreline, just where I had painted it earlier. A thunderstorm had passed, typical of Florida summer afternoons. Sunlight was breaking through the clouds. I love this scene of light and shadow which is repeated over and over during the summer months. Now this 16 x 20 original oil painting is headed to an event in Central Florida.

"Sunset Beach" Had some fun with bright colors painting a sunset. Just visited Sunset Beach where the palms grow in the sand next to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Sunset Beach is by Tarpon Springs. The sunset was so vivid that colors bounced everywhere!

A Florida hammock looks quiet and still but it teeming with life where you can't see. Palms and mangroves are painted in detail as they grow out of the foliage along the waterway. Stillness on the Tomoka, Oil Painting of Old Florida by Judy Batterson

On the east coast of Florida, the Tomoka River is a pristine wilderness that has not changed. I was asked to capture this in a painting by a friend who grew up on the Tomoka. I did site visits, sketches and took photos of this beautiful river. There was such a sense of peace with the gentle flow of the river. Some areas had dense areas of mangroves, palms and underbrush. Other mangrove clumps opened up to the sky, allowing sunlight to reflect off of the water. A white egret stood out against the darker water while other birds flew overhead. This river is "old Florida" appreciated by nature lovers everywhere. Original oil on canvas 24"H x 36"W.

Towards the Light, Abstract Oil in Blues by Judy Batterson

This loose flow of color is a bit unusual for me, but I wanted to try to express in paint what goes on in my head. If you swim underwater and look up, you swim towards the light. If you are in a storm, you know the sun still shines way above the clouds. We are always seeking the light. The bands of blue represent going from darkness into light. Islands of palms, trees, and mangroves cast shadows in the water as the sun sets. The clouds break the sun into shades of yellow, yellow-orange, orange, and rose while being reflected in the water. The 8x8 oil paintings side by side give the image of a large landscape. The tabebuia trees and oaks are balanced, but the stream is off balance to give the effect of depth. The pink and purple impasto blossoms slowly rain onto the ground. The foreground flowers heighten the spring colors. Take a trip into the heart of Florida along trails next to lakes and creeks. There is always dense foliage along the edge of the dark water which reflects the blue sky and palms. Patches of sand and reeds are dotted between the land and water. This is "Old Florida", a vast ecosystem of saltwater marshes and freshwater lakes. This painting captures the sunlight highlighting the edge of a Florida lake. The light beams into the shadows and highlights the palms and sand. This is the old Florida I remember as a child when my friends and I would "go exploring" in the woods. Rosita, Tropical Oil with Boat, Water, Island by Judy Batterson

Pthalo blue and pthalo green made the perfect combination to paint the color of the waters at the southern tip of Florida and beyond. The boat, named Rosita, is anchored while people go island hopping. I love to visit the Keys and see the color of the water! Using a professional photo to enhance my memory of the color, I painted this in my friend Kaye's studio. She gave me helpful tips to capture the movement in the water. Sometimes it's nice to paint together and share ideas with other artists.

Artists have painted many scenes like this, but I tried to be different by making mine very textural. Heavy layers of paint on the palms, the sand and the seaweed give dimension to the foreground. The angle of the sun creates good tension with deep shadows in the underbrush and highlights on the tops of the palms and mangroves.
