Follow the path to the shady side of the garden! Painting en plein air on such a beautiful day made time pass so quickly. Before I knew it, the sun was making distinct shadows of the large bamboo and camellia bushes on the path to the rose garden. Mead Garden Turtle, Impressionist Florida Oil Painting by Judy Batterson

In Winter Park, Florida, an untouched natural piece of Florida known as Mead Garden has been preserved. It is tucked away behind neighborhoods as Winter Park's secret garden! My children explored there like I used to do. The serene 47 acres have a swamp boardwalk, a butterfly garden, shady pathways, and a pond where turtles sun themselves on fallen logs. Generations continue to go there to see the turtles. The pond has lily pads and heavy, shadowy foliage. Hence the Impressionistic composition with cool colors. 18 x 18" original oil.

When asked by the author to paint an oil painting for her book cover, I did research on the subject of the book, "The Little Book of Healing Prayers". Good places for peace and healing are in gardens where one can be still and pray. This thought led to the first garden. Then I discovered that archeologists think that the palm tree was one of the trees in the Garden of Eden. As a Florida artist, I love palm trees! That was my inspiration for the painting! The book is now available at The Glennon House in Winter Park, Florida.

The burnt umber and ultramarine blue dark silhouettes of the cypress trees with aquatic grasses and reeds stand out against the bright setting sun. This is the fifth photo in a sequence of six showing a painting from start to finish. The farthest part of the painting is done, so now it's time for the foreground. This is the start of the large cypress trees in Blue Cypress Lake. From the viewer's perspective, only the dark sides of the trees can be seen when looking at the sun. The shadowy darks are not painted in black but done in a mixture of burnt umber and ultramarine with variations of added oil colors. www.judybatterson.com

This is the second photo in a sequence of six photos, starting with the first brushstrokes to the finished work. In this layer, titanium white blends together the various colors already laid down on the masonite. This helps to create movement and variation without having a flat background. I am working from the farthest point back to the foreground which is the last thing added.

This is a scene along the Florida Intracoastal Waterway which flows along the coastline next to the Atlantic Ocean. The barrier islands make up the true beaches of Florida, and the waterway is on the other side. Captured in oil, the Florida sky adds so much dimension and movement to the overall landscape. The palms, palmettos and mangroves show the land in its natural form. And the water is like the anchoring factor which brings it together. Many layers of oil went into the depth of the painting. A friend called me to say that she had just seen her first poinciana tree in full bloom and was amazed by the vivid beauty of the
bright red blossoms. The reason she recognized the tree is because she had seen this painting. This painting captures the feel of old Florida with a sandy road, an orange grove, and a small lake next to a blooming poinciana tree. The Highwaymen loved to paint the poinciana trees, too, and now I know why. The bright blossoms lend themselves to thick brushstrokes and built up oil texture which make the scene pop with color. Smyrna Dunes, a Florida Coastal Landscape of Palms and Sand Dunes by Judy Batterson

At the tip of the peninsula on the north side of New Smyrna Beach is Smyrna Dunes Park. This is where the ocean and river meet at the inlet. People enjoy walking on the boardwalk through the dunes to the water. I captured this scene at high noon from the boardwalk. The bright sun reflected off the hot sand creating shadows underneath the palms. This is an 8 x 10 oil on masonite.

Eco Trip, a Coastal Florida Oil Landscapes with Kayaks by Judy Batterson

I am very excited about this work because it captures everything I want to say in a painting. I was in a boat on the Intracoastal Waterway when I saw four kayaks pulled up next to an old rowboat beached on a island. The bright colors of the kayaks were dazzling on the white sand. I took as many photos as possible and then started sketching the composition. This was natural
ecological Florida being discovered and enjoyed by modern explorers! The painting took much longer to paint than I ever anticipated because I had to let the layers of the sand dry before painting each kayak. What a joy to paint coastal Florida in this way! I felt like I was "on the island" with each brushstroke. Painting size is 24 x 36" original oil on masonite.

"Beach Path", Florida Oil Landscape of Palms, Water, Island

The Intracoastal Waterway is dotted with small islands. Some are dense with palms and foliage while others have areas where
boats can be beached near pathways that can be followed to the center of the island. These islands are great for picnics. This is one of the accessible islands, lending itself to fun in the sun. Painting size is 11 x 13 and is framed in lovely brushed copper.
