The brilliance of an ocean sunrise is exciting and challenging to capture on canvas. When the sun filled the sky with breathtaking colors, the water reflected the light. Even the sand glowed. Lost, Oil Beach Landscape Painting by Judy Batterson

A small red boat beached on yellow sand under storm clouds is the setting for "The world is so big and my boat is so small." The boat is so small and lost next to the vastness of the ocean and sky. The storm clouds add to the drama. We have all had times when we feel overwhelmed like this. But we have to experience storms in order to appreciate the sunshine. Using complimentary colors of yellow and violet helps to intensify the scene. Chosen for Winter Park Magazine Cover July 2010 issue.

Blustery Day, Impressionistic Wind Blown Palms, by Judy Batterson

Using a palette knife and thick brushstrokes, this painting was done in an impressionistic style. The wind blown palms are dancing in the air currents while the sun reflects on the water. The clouds are filled with light and shadows. The paint is still in layers but painted with thicker paint. This painting is currently in the Biennial V Exhibit at the Museum of Florida Art in DeLand.

Palm Glow, a Sunset Glow on Palm Tree and Beach by Judy Batterson

This painting is filled with color! It glows with a soft orange light and is softened by blue shadows. I decided to paint a palm tree on the beach which would seem radiant with warm light as the sun started to set. The sand reflects color as well as the waves.

Coastal Escape, a Florida Oil Landscape by Judy Batterson

This is a scene along the Florida Intracoastal Waterway which flows along the coastline next to the Atlantic Ocean. The barrier islands make up the true beaches of Florida, and the waterway is on the other side. Captured in oil, the Florida sky adds so much dimension and movement to the overall landscape. The palms, palmettos and mangroves show the land in its natural form. And the water is like the anchoring factor which brings it together. Many layers of oil went into the depth of the painting. This painting was chosen to be in the "Simply the Best" book by Timothy's Gallery and Art-Exchange.com. It is an 18 x 22 original oil on masonite.
