This larger oil painting expresses what I think is the essence of coastal Florida...tropical breezes, clusters of palms, waves softly touching the sand, islands dotting the coastal areas and a feeling of bliss. This painting is now on exhibit at Leu Gardens in Orlando until July 9, 2014.

This 12 x 24 oil painting was from a houseboat trip on the St. John's River. It was quite an adventure! Gators everywhere, birds everywhere, and the sky was yellow at sunrise. Pristine wilderness surrounded us as were experiencing beautiful Old Florida. Palms lined the river for miles. Now on display at Leu Gardens in Orlando until July 9, 2014.

We rented a houseboat from Holly Bluff Marina near DeLand, Florida, and took it on the St. John's River for the weekend. What we found was total pristine wilderness with beautiful tall palms lining the river's edge. I took my sketchbook and paints to capture the water, birds, and trees. This painting has been chosen for the 2013 Artists Registry Exhibit which shows two works of art by 80 artists from around the state. 12x24 original oil.

Eco Trip, Oil Painting of Colorful Kayaks on Island Shore by Judy Batterson, Florida Artist

This painting continues to draw viewers into it as they want to explore the island with the kayakers who are out counting turtle nests! That was happening when I first saw the kayaks on the sand while I was in a nearby boat. The kayaks belonged to the Marine Discovery Center of Volusia County, FL. Capturing that adventure in oil made an exciting painting experience! The painting has won many awards and most recently was chosen for the city of Casselberry 2014 Art Calendar.

Pristine wilderness of Old Florida lines the sides of the St. John's River. As the longest river in Florida, it winds north through 12 counties. We took a houseboat into the middle basin part of the river where I was able to sketch and paint the palms, marshes and wildlife. Tall stately palms grew along the river. We anchored and woke up to a sky of light making everything lush and green against the tannic slow moving water. Old Florida is inspiration! 12"H x 24"W original oil on canvas. Price: $ 600.00

What would Ponce De Leon have seen five hundred years ago when he set foot in La Florida? He would have seen island hammocks along the Intracoastal Waterway just as we see today. These marshy hammocks have mangroves, palms, lush foliage, and abundant wildlife. Waters run with the tides from the ocean in these low coastal areas. We still enjoy this cool palette of tranquility. 16 x 20" original oil.

McKean Gate Rollins College, OIl Painting of Rollins College, Winter Park Florida by Judy Batterson

Walk through the McKean Gate and enter the beautiful campus of Rollins College in Winter Park! Honoring Hugh McKean, former president of Rollins, the gate is a tribute to the man who also brought the Tiffany glass collection to Winter Park. As I studied the gate, I had an "Abbey Road" flashback! Knowing that Paul McCartney's stepdaughter goes to Rollins, I decided to paint the gate with the crosswalk in mind. Chosen for the 11th Annual Paint The Town exhibition at the Gallery at Avalon Island in Downtown Orlando, opening night is March 21, 2013.

In homage to the Florida Highwaymen! I found a scene that would be similar to what they painted. This 16 x 20 original oil captured a prominent palm along the coast of Florida. The sun was setting, the waves were lapping and it was the end of a beautiful afternoon.

In 2013, it's time to rediscover Old Florida with palm trees, coastal views,and barrier islands. This 20 x 28 oil painting is my attempt to capture what Ponce de Leon discovered!

Near the south bridge to New Smyrna Beach is a beautiful park along the river. I set up my pochade plein air art box there to focus on the palm trees. Using the artist prerogative, I arranged the composition on a small portion of what I saw in front of me. Painting alla prima, I used impressionistic strokes for the palms. The whole time I was thinking about how I love palm trees! They are always so filled with light, shadows and movement. So Florida! 5"H x 7"W Price: $ 75.00

Boaters on the Intracoastal Waterway in New Smyrna Beach know this island well. It is located between the south and north bridges. The palms grow straight and tall in rows behind the mangroves. Oyster beds can be seen at low tide. I set up my pochade plein air painting box across the river and painted part of the island. The ocean breezes were strong and nearly blew me over! A Florida hammock looks quiet and still but it teeming with life where you can't see. Palms and mangroves are painted in detail as they grow out of the foliage along the waterway. This hammock, with abundant wildlife and strong reflections, is typical of the marshy hammocks along the low coastal areas of Florida. A cool palette of blues and greens make a calming scene. Mead Garden Palms, a Florida OIl Plein Air Landscape by Judy Batterson

Painting en plein air on location at Mead Garden, I set up my easel on the west side of the turtle pond in the back of the Garden. This area is almost jungle like with so many moss covered trees, palms, reeds, as well as otters, turtles, gators and water birds. The sun hit the palms and highlighted the back of the pond. My focal point became the trio of palms in front of a mossy oak with dark shadows in the underbrush. This spot captured the true essence of natural Florida! 9 x 12 Oil.

On the west coast of Florida, south of Marco Island, Chokoloskee Island has a small settlement. From Chokoloskee, you can fish Everglades National Park and Ten Thousand Islands. A friend sent me a photo of clouds that looked like hearts in the sky. That inspired me to do this whimsical painting of pelicans flying through an open heart cloud with another heart cloud below. A movie called Endless Summer documented two surfers chasing the sun around the world while searching for the perfect wave. The movie poster had the huge bright orb as the logo for this surfing safari.
